to play dumb

English translation: to play ignorant

English language (monolingual) [PRO]

English term or phrase: to play dumb
I´d like to know if there´s a synonym that I can use to express this. This phrase doesn´t sound very polite to me.
The person knows what the problem is but pretends he doesn´t and even says something to show he doesn´t know but he knows perfectly well what you´re talking about.

Not proper English? Sorry, but I don't think you understand English. Check out all these Google links:

It may be improper, but it's still in common use and although you may not agree with it, millions of people say it. As the saying goes, "When in Rome...." I also highly doubt that those millions of people who are using "improper" language will change just because you think they're using incorrect English.

disagree  Cilian O'Tuama: "pretend like" isn't proper English // Millions of hits for "I seen him" - but equally wrong. So what's a linguist supposed to do? Just accept anything as correct if enough people say it, whether in Rome or the Arab world or USA?
1 hr
-> Please check your references before disqualifying anyone that it's not proper English.

agree  Arabic & More: Although I prefer "feign ignorance," your response is perfectly good and is common in the U.S. I don't understand why Cilian felt the need to disagree.

-> Thank you. I'm an American and the expression is very common in the US.
