English term or phrase: licenses (verb)
Dear colleagues

I have a question regarding the following sentence:

The Company owns and licenses all IP rights necessary for the operation of its business.

Now I know that "to license" means to "grant a permission to" etc., but could "licenses" also mean "has a licence for" in this context? What's your understanding of "license" here?

Thanks in advance!

Selected answer:grant permission to use
Explanation:
The fact that the beginning of the sentence says 'owns and licenses..." would lead me to believe that it licenses the use out to other companies.

Of course, there could be some weird tax law that makes it advantageous to own the rights and then to license them to itself, but your context does not look like it has to do with weird tax laws.

My thoughts from the USA.
