"Carpet Tufting Center Guide

The primary backing tends to shrink ("neck down") in width or can drift to one side during the run of a roll, and the individual rolls can vary in width. The center-guide system constantly monitors for these conditions. As the backing passes between them, each XXX sensor pair sends a signal to the PLC, reporting the backing edge location on each side. The PLC compare the edge locations of each pair and calculates whether the backing is properly centered. If not, the PLC automatically prompts the mechanical holding device to adjust the position of the backing. The adjustable-field photoelectric sensor monitors for ***backing roll release***. When the roll runs out of material, the sensor will alert the system PLC. The "Primary Backing Out" message will then appear on the PLC's monitor, and the tufting machine will stop automatically. This automates and streamlines one more part of the manufacturing process. System Engineering: The two XXX sensor analog signals are fed into a PLC and compared to each other. If the primary backing position must be adjusted, the mechanical holding device for the backing is moved automatically by a gear motor until the carpet is re-centered. The gear motor is AC-inverter controlled, so the response speed is adjustable for each machine.

...it may be a stupid question but what does it mean that the roll is released? can you help me with a synonym?

Explanation:
To be honest, Elena, in plain English, I can't make a lot of sense of this, it may need someone with specialist knowledge to explain.

the only thing I can imagine it means is perhaps the way in which the backing unrolls, or is paid out from the supply roll; they might be talking about how smoothly it unrolls (whether perhaps the tension varies, for example), or even, conceivably, the 'release that occurs at the end of ther roll, when it runs out, and the end becomes free or is 'released' from the roller it is supplied on.

But none of these ideas is particularly convincing to me, 'release' seems a slightly odd word to use, without knowing exactly what they had in mind.

Yes, re-reading your original text again, the idea of detecting the end coming off the roll seems the most likely:

\"The adjustable-field photoelectric sensor monitors for backing roll release. (This means that...) When the roll runs out of material, the (= this A-FP sensor) sensor will alert the system PLC. The \"Primary Backing Out\" message will then appear...\"

agree  juvera: Photoelectric sensors are used to detect changes, and that's what is happening, when the backing roll runs out. So the sensor alerts the system PLC.
