English term or phrase: mask rail follower
"On the mask rail follower when we raise it up into the travel position, we also have an air cylinder with a lock. These are unlocked from inside the cab. When you unlock it, you apply air to this end of the cylinder, we lift the mask rail follower up, the lock will kick out and we can drop the mask rail follower down to the rail."

What does "mask" mean here in this context?
This is a part of a manual related to a railroad machine (tamping machine).

Explanation:
I'm reasonably sure this is what is meant; in the UK, they are known as "rail feelers", but it's pretty clear you are handling an American English document. The "mask" presumably means they are cut out in the shape of the rail head, and their messages then would be transmitted electronically to the "business end"; but in my opinion, the word "mask" is redundant and therefore misleading here.
