English term or phrase: heating thermostat and cooling thermostat
air conditioning -

(the English text is at times full of mistakes, so I am always worried that I am "dealing" with a wrong English term, is there two thermostats one for heating and one for cooling? Or is it the same thermostat but the unit is in cooling mode or heating mode?)

example of occurrences of these terms:

When the Float Switch is Tripped While the Cooling Thermostat is ON:

Cooling thermostat is off

By setting to “Set Fan Speed,” you can switch the fan speed to the set fan speed when the heating thermostat is OFF.

agree  Tony M: Yes --- often, to achieve upper an d lower temperature limits, they simply use 2 separate thermostats: one switches on BELOW a certain temperature (for heating), the other switches on ABOVE a certain temperature (for cooling) In between, both are OFF

agree  RHELLER: even though there may only be one on the wall of the room (for consumer convenience), there are probably two internal thermostats, one for each unit

agree  Deborah Workman: Yes, as per Dusty. I had a wall control unit like that once -- a blue marker triggered one temp and a red one the other (can't remember if blue set cold min temp so heat would start or set cold max temp so cool would shut off and vice versa!).
