I think that there must be a "dash mark" on one of the sides of the button. A dash is a line, a hyphen, it looks like this: -

I just had a thought: some equipment have buttons with a dash
\"-\" on one side, and a little empty circle \"O\" on the other. My coffeemaker is like that. When the button is pushed to the \"-\" side, it is on. When the button is turned to the \"O\" side, it is off.
