English term

put a drumstick under each arm

English Other Music
If you tilt the drum slightly away from yourself, you allow the drum to breathe from the bottom, offering better tonal qualities. This is common among seated players. Your shoulders are relaxed; so relaxed you should be able to ***put a drumstick under each arm and practice your techniques that way***. Your forearms are parallel to the floor, and your back is straight.

Dear English speakers!
Could anyone clarify the highlighted phrase for me? I just don't understand how you can stay relaxed having drumsticks under your arms. It's really puzzling me. Or... am I missing something here?
The text is about playing hand drums (congas).
I'll appreciate any suggestions.

Now, now, Jim! 'Worse' is a relative term... I feel an 'instant poll' coming on... :-))
Jim Tucker (X) Sep 8, 2007:
I can think of worse places to put them.
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Sep 8, 2007:
Oh, I see now: the drumsticks should be placed right in the armpits, and it doesn't matter if they are parallel to your body or to the floor.
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Sep 8, 2007:
And I thought they are just stuck under your arms, somewhat parallel to the floor. That what made me puzzled.
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Sep 8, 2007:
Thank you for your explanation Tony! You mean the drumsticks are placed vertically and parallel to your body?

See explanation below...

I think what they mean is that it is your SHOULDERS that are relaxed, meaning that the weight of your upper arms hanging naturally down the side of your body should be enough to keep the drumsticks in place. If your shoulders were not relaxed but hunched up, then the only way you could keep the drumsticks in place would be by clenching your elbows into your rib-cage.

Does that make more sense now?

Yes, right in the armpits, and yes, I would have said horizontal, front-to-back...

...they'd grip better that way!
