English term or phrase: chocolate (creative synonyms!)
Greetings all,

I'm translating a colourful piece about chocolate-eating in different countries, and have been racking my brains to come up with some sort of creative synonym - like "amber nectar" for beer - rather than repeating the word "chocolate" ad nauseum.

Any ideas? Best answer gets a family size bar of Cadbury's in the post ...

Thanks

Hi Ian,
your job sounds LOTS more fun than mine today!

Take a look at this site, which may be a goldmine for you.

For example:
The plant’s botanical name, Theobroma cacao, literally means “food of the gods.” To its many devotees, chocolate is exactly that.

brown gold

Explanation:
Well, chocolate is brown, and its taste kind of makes it a precious commodity.

A vague allusion to black gold (... and up through the ground came a bubblin' crude - oil, that is. Black gold. Texas tea. But I digress.)

Some other ideas - the food they eat in Heaven (rugby is the game they play in Heaven, so some say - well I reckon chocolate is the food they eat!), ultimate comfort food (maybe a bit lame), food of Paradise.

Oh well, I had a go anyway!

gift of Gods

Explanation:
Once I heard this nice synonym for chocolate. Now as I was searching on the internet I found this interesting fact:

"Mexican chocolate, as we know it, is divine, and always has been. The Aztecs called it the gift of gods. 7The Olmecs first discovered cocoa beans and processed them into a beverage 3000 years ago. The Classic Maya cultivated cocoa beans some 1500 years ago. Their high esteem for it is reflected in the fact that they were buried with their elegantly painted clay chocolate vessels. 8One of the last Mayan rulers of Tikal was called “Lord Chocolate”. In an ancient myth, Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent god, planted the first cocoa tree. He was called the god of light, and the giver of the drink of the gods. Chocolate was so precious that cocoa beans served as common currency throughout the Aztec Empire, and were used in religious rites.9Soon after the Conquest, cocoa became the rage of Spain, and then of all of Europe. Today, spiced chocolate is still a drink favored by Mexicans, and part of many family feasts. In Bolivia and Peru, many myths involving gods and ancestors surround the potato, the common staple of Andean cooking. Hundreds of different types of potatoes of fascinating shapes, colors, flavors and textures are cultivated and prepared in a variety 7While the origin of the word is unproven, chocolate it is believed to be an Aztec term (xoco and atl, or bitter water) that may have been applied to a popular cocoa drink. 8Coe Sophie D.: America’s First Cuisines, p 141 "

GIFT OF THE GODS

http://www.cbc.ca/news/indepth/chocolate/

\"Some consider chocolate an effective diet food, claiming that a chunk of chocolate taken before meals diminishes one\'s appetite.

And, lest we forget, on Feb. 14, 1929 Al Capone\'s gang gunned down seven members of Bugs Moran\'s gang in Chicago in what is remembered as \"The St. Valentine\'s Day Massacre.\" It had nothing to do with chocolate.

But read on, as CBC News Online\'s exhaustive research on Valentines, love and chocolate reveals the history, health benefits, science, myths, business, addictive, literary and aphrodisiac qualities of this dark, light, bitter, sweet treat once accepted as having come to Earth from heaven as \"a gift of the gods.\"

http://www.healthylivingeating.com/chocolate.htm

\"The history of cacao goes back at least as early as 500 A.D. Originating from the South American-native cacao tree, chocolate is now heavily cultivated in the Caribbean, Africa, South-East Asia, and some South Pacific Islands. Today, cocoa beans are roasted, winnowed, mashed, mixed with vanilla & sugar, conched, tempered, and molded to form what we refer to as chocolate. The end result is the unmatched, sweet tasting, fragrant, mouth-watering delight referred to as \'the gift of the Gods\'.

Explanation:
this website I just found uses "gift FOR gods" rather than of the gods. It also lists some other synonyms and not-quite-synonyms:
From rainforest treasure to luscious treat—immerse yourself in the story of chocolate.

A gift for the gods. A symbol of wealth and luxury. An economic livelihood. Bonbons. Hot fudge. Candy bars. For thousands of years humans have been fascinated with the delicious phenomenon that we call “chocolate.”
