English term or phrase: Who is the Geronimo de Mendieta?
I'm tranlating American Novelist Paul Auster's and a name he mentioned I'm confused like this :" From the very beginning, according to Stillman, the discovery of the New World was the quickening impulse of utopian thought, the spark that gave hope to the perfectibility of human life----from Thomas More's book of 1516 to Geronimo de Mendieta's prophecy, some years later, that American would become an ideal theocratic state, a veritable City of God."

My question is: who is the Geronimo de Mendieta?

Thank you!
