First it seemed as if the rising sun was stopped by the mountain which looked like teeth of a huge wild beast, but then the sun rised above the mountain peaks.

Peaks are sharp and highest points of the mountains. There are no trees on the peaks, that's why they are "treeless". The rocks look cruel like sharp teeth.

Explanation:
First it seemed as if the rising sun was stopped by the mountain which looked like teeth of a huge wild beast, but then the sun rised above the mountain peaks.

Peaks are sharp and highest points of the mountains. There are no trees on the peaks, that's why they are "treeless". The rocks look cruel like sharp teeth.

agree  Tony M: Yes, and maybe there is the idea too of the sun 'catching' on the teeth, and then escaping from them (unlike Jake) and 'rising above' them / Thanks, KS! / Not usually my scene, but your descriptions make me want to... :-)

  -> As for Jake, his death was dramatical: Roland faced a choice to save the boy's life or to continue his pursuit of the Dark Tower. The latter prevailed, though he loved the boy + You ought if you have not yet :) The books are masterpieces!
