English term or phrase: cruel and treeless teeth of those peaks
A sentence from Stephen King's novel like this: He turned and ate the other half of as he watched the sun over the mountains where Jake had died-- first seeming to catch on the cruel and treeless teeth of those peaks, then rising above them.

How to understand "first seeming to catch on the cruel and treeless teeth of those peaks, then rising above them.

Explanation:
First it seemed as if the rising sun was stopped by the mountain which looked like teeth of a huge wild beast, but then the sun rised above the mountain peaks.

Peaks are sharp and highest points of the mountains. There are no trees on the peaks, that's why they are "treeless". The rocks look cruel like sharp teeth.

agree  Tony M: Yes, and maybe there is the idea too of the sun 'catching' on the teeth, and then escaping from them (unlike Jake) and 'rising above' them / Thanks, KS! / Not usually my scene, but your descriptions make me want to... :-)

-> As for Jake, his death was dramatical: Roland faced a choice to save the boy's life or to continue his pursuit of the Dark Tower. The latter prevailed, though he loved the boy + You ought if you have not yet :) The books are masterpieces!

agree  Derek Gill Franßen: Exactly, the teeth (the peaks) are so jagged that they seem to catch (or snag) the sun, before it rises further. :-)

agree  PRAKASH SHARMA: The words are really masterpieces and a wonderful description of the rising sun above the mountain peaks. In hindi, there is a poem regarding himalayan peaks, 'khada himalaya bata raha hai daro na andhi pani say......' by Mr. 'Nepali' & here peaks r Bten

agree  humbird: Yes, maybe it is a very rocky mountain peak, where its shape looks like teeth of wild, carniborous animals.

-> I think it's a mountain chain with several sharp peaks. Anyway, a nice metaphor :)
