English term or phrase: colic
The following quotation is from Kipps, a novel by H.G. Wells.

"And his aunt made him say his Catechism and something she certainly called the "Colic for the Day" every Sunday in the year."

I can't figure out what "colic" means in that passage, it is clear the aunt doesn't mean pain by "colic" I think it is a mispronounced word in order to create a humorous atmosphere, so what can be the correct pronounced form of "colic"?

There is an element in the Mass called the 'Collect', though my distant memories are too hazy for me to be able to tell you whether this is something that changes from day to day and whether or not it is something one can recite.
