English to Afrikaans translations [Non-PRO]
General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
English term or phrase: darling
I am aware that there are a number of different words that mean or are similar in meaning to darling in afrikaans ie liefling, skat, hartlam etc - however, i am interested to get a sense of the more subtle differences between these terms - which ones are modern which are old fashioned - in otherwords the context in which the different terms might ordinarily be used and by what kind of person - i am basically looking for a translation of darling which is not too corny/babyish.

Darling would be used the same as angel or dearest

"Liefling" would usually be my first choice, but "skat" or "skattie" would also do the trick.
