English to Arabic translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Automotive / Cars & Trucks / auto parts��
English term or phrase:gasket
The well known seal for preventing leaks between engine parts. The translations I found for this are حشية, طوق مانع and لبوس , all of which do not seem user friendly to me. The word commonly used in Egypt is شنبر شنابر , which seems friendlier to me. I would like to get feedback on preferences.
Explanation: Coming a bit late in the discussion, my better half's first thought was حشوة. FWIW I also found it in the Saudi Civil Defense dictionary http://www.cd.gov.sa/dic1.asp : Rubber gasket=حشوة من المطاط However, personally I would follow the dictionary and go for the similar حشية, which I believe is your preference too.

Just read gaafar\'s answer and the agrees to him now. I see MElHelw already suggested حشوة. BTW, my husband\'s second thought was جوان too!

Thanks for the advice. I was only kidding, I never worried about the glasses' frames in the beginning, nor the dental fillings. There is not ambiguity because the contexts are worlds apart. I who wants to get away from ����? I used ���� and ��� in my document.
Two terms are used in Lebanon, ���� and �����. I'm not sure if ����� is used elsewhere

seems to be a popular choice and generates more google hits than ����. The only thing is the plural would be ��� I believe, which takes us from ������� ��� ������ ��� ����� ��� ������� but on the positive side ��� ��� ���� �� ����

���� and ����� seem right to me at this point. I may qualify the word with ���� ������ in certain places. But I will keep the quesion open to get feedback until I send the translation.

Thank you all for being patient and for the helpful input. If we choose ���� as the common denominator (inversely, as no dialect uses it, so we're fair to everyone), what would be the plural, bearing in mind there is a shadda over the ya'?

Check this article http://www.akhbarelyom.org.eg/sayarat/issues/65/1300.html , both piston rings and simple gaskets are referred to as ����� here. The author mentions both at the start. This must be the origin of Imane's ����� ������
My advice to you is to use a term from the dictionary because in every Arab country they use different term as you can notice from the comments, and I believe you want all Arabic readers to understand what you are translating.
In cars, actually motors, ����/�����/��� ����(mechanics prounounce it shambar)are piston rings. For more precise usage 1 of them is called oil scraper ring and the others (generally 3) are compression rings. See Al-Khatib's Dict. pages 590 and 591.
���� means the frame of glasses, i.e. the part that holds the lenses. That's in Syria, anyway. I'm not sure if it has a different meaning when in a different context though.

Brakes are translated as ���� in the dictionary, but because auto technicians are not linguists, I use ����� instead in my text. I just do not want to use ����� in this case if it is a familiar word only in Egypt, or if there are other problems with the word. This is why I count on your opinions!

It will be helpful to provide some feedback. I already listed the available translations in my question. Al-Khatb's dictionary is open on page 331 right next to me. What I need are opinions to favor one choice of words over the other.

Explanation: This is the Gulf preference, introduced by British and American oil companies. The plural is قازقيزات
The same thing applies to the related term "washer," which is called واشر, and the plural is واشرات
I have heard Lebanese plumbers in Qatif, Saudi Arabia, use the same terms. I don't know if that is what they use in Lebanon, or if they were just yielding to the local usage in Qatif.
