English to Arabic translations [PRO] Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general) / Power of Attorney
English term or phrase:stead
in his name, place and stead to sign on his behalf and to bind him ....
Mohsin i understand what you are saying and in modern speak i agree there is no place for tautology however quite a lot of legal speak hasn't changed over the yerars and still seems a bit archaic (in english anyway).
If I accept your explanation, Emandan, then I have to assume tautology in the document Awadh is translating. I think there is no room for tautolog in a legal document. According to your definition the translation of the given context would read:
this is a misconception, unfortunately, with many translators including myself. Only recently I came to know that "stead" does not mean بدلاً but مصلحة or فائدة. Before you disagree please consult a dictionary.

فائدة . بَدَل، مکان (n)، ینفع (v)
Explanation: If it is a noun it will be translated "فائدة . بَدَل، مکان"
1obsolete : locality, place"مکان"
2: advantage —used chiefly in the phrase to stand one in good stead
3: the office, place, or function ordinarily occupied or carried out by someone or something else <acted in his brother's stead>
And if it is a verb so it will have only one meaning ": to be of avail to or to help"ینفع
اسْم : فائدة . بَدَل
فِعْل : ينفع
It depends on the context so plz next time send a piece of context to enable us help u effectively
