Spoken languages are auditory-verbal languages, relying on speech and hearing to produce and receive words. Spoken language interpreters therefore work in the auditory-verbal modality. Sign language interpreters, however, usually work between a spoken (auditory-verbal) language and a signed language, which is visual-gestural.
