see explanation Explanation: "chart-up" means that the chart is squared to the screen, just like it was printed on the paper. Usually, but not always, North is at the top edge (exceptions being river charts and harbors that run more E-W - you want to save paper). All text on the chart is printed for readibility with the chart at that position. course-up and route-up ... they are alternate ways to show the current voyage's path, by rotating the display of the chart to make the line of the route or course run up the screen, to be easier to read. The important point is that they rotate the map and can make the underlying chart harder to read.
