Context / details / background, please Explanation: Greetings. Re your post on ProZ.com Context / details / background, please. Does this query relate to the petroleum industry or what other industry / sector? Absent some clarification, the term "sawai'l al-thiqaabat' might suffice. سوائل الثقابة or سوائل أجهوة الثقابة That term appears in some dictionaries about civil and construction engineering. HTH. Khair, in sha' Allah. Regards from Los Angeles, Stephen H. Franke |

موائع الحفر، سوائل الحفر Explanation: The two suggestions above are pronounced: MAWA’I’ AL-HAFR SAWA’IL AL-HAFR The first one is suggested by Al-Khatib’s Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms. The reason for MAWA’I’ is that these fluids can contain gases as well, hence the generic term. I am throwing in the second suggestion because a simpler term may be called for, depending on the nature of the text and the intended readership. I have used this term in my work for B.J., Owens, Philips Petroleum, and Transocean, all of which was intended for the Gulf region. The most extensive online (monolingual) oil and gas dictionary is the Schlumberger Oilfield Glossary, which has the following to say about drilling fluids: http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/Display.cfm?Term=drilli... "Drilling Fluids: Any of a number of liquid and gaseous fluids and mixtures of fluids and solids (as solid suspensions, mixtures and emulsions of liquids, gases and solids) used in operations to drill boreholes into the earth. Synonymous with "drilling mud" in general usage, although some prefer to reserve the term "drilling fluid" for more sophisticated and well-defined "muds." Classifications of drilling fluids has been attempted in many ways, often producing more confusion than insight. One classification scheme, given here, is based only on the mud composition by singling out the component that clearly defines the function and performance of the fluid: (1) water-base, (2) non-water-base and (3) gaseous (pneumatic). Each category has a variety of subcategories that overlap each other considerably." As you can see, “drilling mud” is a near-synonym translated as TEEN AL-HAFR طين الحفر Fuad Al-Khatibs Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms Reference: http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/Display.cfm?Term=drilli... |

سائل الحفر - طين الحفر Explanation: Functions of the drilling fluid: Removes cuttings from the bottom of the hole and carries them to the surface Holds cuttings and weight material in suspension when circulation is interrupted Releases sand and cuttings at the surface Walls the hole with an impermeable cake Minimizes adverse effects upon the formation Cools and lubricates the bit and drill string Supports part of the weight of the drill stem and casing Controls subsurface pressure Transmits hydraulic horsepower Maximizes down hole information obtained Transmit electronic data from down hole tools.
