season's greetings fixed combination - classifying Genitive Explanation: Classifying genitives typically enter into fixed combinations with a following noun. In many cases NPs with classifying genitives have stress patterns which differ from those of NPs with specifying genitives. In addition, the meaning of many NPs with classifying genitives cannot be predicted from the meaning of each constituent (e.g. cat's eye), and no adjective can intervene between a classifying genitive and the following noun. All this indicates that the combination of classifying genitive and following noun should be regarded as a compound noun (cf. lecture 7): note the difference between his doctor's advice (specifying) and his doctor's degree (classifying). Additional examples of classifying genitives: |athlete's |foot, |cat's |cradle, |cat's eye, |child's play, |devil's |advocate, the |lion's share [of sth], | ploughman's |lunch, |shepherd's |pie. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 49 mins (2010-12-06 09:35:59 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- kad se kaže "fixed combination" znači da se samo tako može frazirati, tj: cat eye, shepherd pie ili athlete foot nije ispravno. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 50 mins (2010-12-06 09:37:13 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Ref. http://www.hf.ntnu.no/engelsk/staff/johannesson/111gram/lect... |
