pseudoland

Explanation:

In an attempt to neutralise any preconceived ideas that may have been held by a subject about a country mentioned, each headline was then changed to remove any reference to specific country names or well known figures. A new list of headlines was composed which replaced any mention of a specific country, leader, or nationality with 'Pseudoland', 'President Pseudo', or 'Pseudolander' (see Appendix 2). Other alterations made included changing the name of neighbouring countries referred to in headlines to 'Neighbourland', and occasionally (aprox. 5 times) having to change a name reference to a descriptive (e.g. Anwar Sadat to 'fallen political leader'). The need to subjectively alter a name to a descriptive was problematic, however, fortunately this only needed to be done a few times. The alternative, creating further general titles to be used across articles (such as was done with 'President Pseudo'), was seen as requiring too much for the test-subject to remember before beginning the survey.

This list of altered headlines was then taken to three test subjects, selected for their varying level of international awareness. (Each of these three were initially given a map and asked to name as many countries as they could. A High level of international awareness was ranked as someone who could name 50 countries or more, Medium level was someone who could name 20-50, and Low level was someone who could name fewer than 20 countries on a blank map.) The subjects were asked this question: What kind of a feeling does the following headline give you about the country 'Pseudoland'? Would you say the country's situation (at least at the time of the event depicted in the headline) seems… then were asked to select one of the following: Very Positive, Positive, Neutral, Negative, Very Negative, Don't Know.
