English term or phrase: unbundle DSL
With a growing community of end users cutting their landline phones in favor of wireless or even VoIP with a Vonage-like service, there’s a growing desire to have a dedicated-loop ADSL, or what some call ‘naked DSL,’ service. Naked DSL enables the end user to purchase a DSL service without the obligation of buying phone service. But naked DSL is not just relevant to the wireless-savvy customers — it also will find a niche with those that want their own competitive voice provider, as well as gamers, SOHO users and SMBs that need dedicated high-speed connections. In addition to providing a lower monthly bill, the advent of naked DSL could also provide a foundation for customers to use that same line for emerging VoIP services.
In the past year, there has been a number of operators, including IOCs (Warwick Valley Telephone), RBOCs (Qwest, SBC, Verizon and BellSouth) and competitive carriers (Covad) that have launched a naked DSL service. While some operators have been quietly offering the service as a defensive strategy to thwart the cable threat, Qwest Communications and Covad have been very vocal about the prospects of the service.
Last February, Qwest was one of the first operators to throw its hat into the standalone DSL ring because of customer demand. The strategy also plays into the RBOC’s own VoIP plan, whereby its customers could use the standalone DSL line to carry VoIP services.
“Our goal is to sell a full suite of services to a customer, so ideally the triple play would be the best way to go, but not having a relationship with the customer is unacceptable,” said Scott Russell, Qwest’s director of broadband product management. “There are a small number of customers that are converting to wireless as their primary voice connection, so obviously that landline relationship disappears. If by chance the customer goes with Verizon Wireless, for example, we want to retain a relationship and the best way to do that is to unbundle DSL.”
