(Buying and eating) ready-to-eat, take-away food

■ Food described as 中食 may be a boxed meal (弁当, べんとう) containing rice, meat/fish and vegetables or, more commonly, separate portions of main and/or side dishes (惣菜) that can be combined together, or with home-cooked dishes, to make up a full meal. In certain contexts this term also refers to food served at such premises.

□ Take-away food sold at fastfood or other restaurants is not usually considered to be 中食.

This term, meaning "somewhere between eating out and cooking at home", was coined around the same time as the establishment of 惣菜産業 (そうざいさんぎょう), the industry specialising in producing and selling freshly prepared take-away 惣菜 portions, in the 1990's.

(Web, November 2002)

(Web, November 2002)
