A classic example is the Personal Telco Project (PTP) in Portland, which is attempting to do what MetroFi has not: cover the city with a Wi-Fi network. But this is a network built from the ground up, using volunteers, Linksys or similar Wi-Fi routers reflashed with the WiFiDog software, and shared DSL or fiber broadband connections.

PTP offers users willing to install and {host} its Wi-Fi access point a list of ISPs who explicitly permit the sharing of a broadband connection, and warns them to check with their ISP to make sure there's no violation of the service contract terms.
