Until production of dedicated Tablet PC displays ramps up, one of the early challenges has been working the required active digitizer—which uses radio frequency to detect the stylus before it makes contact with the screen—into the machine designs. Fujitsu had trouble making the radios work well when placed entirely behind the panel, but the compromise has been to develop LCD screens that have a pocket in them that can accommodate the active digitizer. “You don’t have all these components sitting in front of the digitizer,” Bernhard explains, and LCD makers are not saddled with a backlog of expensive, highly customized products if the Tablet PC market fails to skyrocket.
