Haichao Wang 的意见是对的。在一定的语境中，\"pointer\" 和 \"cursor\" 是两个概念。\"cursor\" 是个老概念，是“DOS”时代留下来的，指文本处理时插入文字的位置上闪烁的光斑。到了Windows 时代，这个光斑变成了I 形标志，英文叫做\" I-beam\"。用\"mouse\" 调动的光标变化多端，“微软”放弃使用\"cursor\" 一词。代之以\" mouse pointer\" ，用来概括“箭头”、“砂漏”、“手形”、“I-beam”、“十字形”，等等。但是，微软之外的其它公司和组织，仍然在与\"mouse pointer\" 相同的意义上使用\"cousor\" 一词。例如，在HTML中，\"cursor\" 可以定义为\"hand\"，运行中显现的是手形光标。在JAVA的AWT中，\"cursor\" 也是通指 \"mouse\" 所调动的图标。因此，在英文中这些术语也是不统一的，其中还涉及一些商业上的考虑。

其实，这个问题，以及IT 行业中的其它许多译名问题，只有抛开地域偏见、商业利益才能较圆满地解决。譬如台湾人把 \"mouse\" 译为“滑鼠”，也很传神。由于没有功能的描述，现在看来问题倒少一点。当初谁也预见不到，\"tracing device\" 会如此多样化，\"mouse\" 只是调动“光标”的设备的一种，如果总是把“光标”与调动它的设备联系起来翻译，如“鼠标指针”、“滑鼠指标”之类，以后麻烦会越来越多。对于使用 \"tracing ball\", \"tracing pad\", \"tracing bar\" 的人来说，不知是否也要有相应的“循迹球指针”、“循迹板指针”、“循迹杆指针”？
我觉得可以用一个简单的方案来解决。用“光标”一词来通译\"cursor\" 和 \"mouse pointer\"。即使以后微软不叫它\"mouse pointer\"，而叫 \"tracing pointer\" 或其它什么也没关系。具体的可以进一步区分为“箭头光标”、“手形光标”、“I形光标”等等。光标在文本部分点击后，停留下来的I形标记(即原来意义上的cursor)，可称为“游标”或“I形插入标记”。这样，软件的术语与硬件术语脱离，以后问题比较好处理。
