English term or phrase: information-processing model of stress
Hamilton's (1980) information-processing model of stress holds that adaptive coping is a function of reduction in informational load. This reduction is the operative function in any coping behavior or defensive operation. Two or more coping strategies can be viewed as similar if they reflect the same resultant simplifications of stressor characteristics. There must be suitable operations to contain the information being offered by the stressor. Effective coping results from effectively reducing the amount and form of stimulation and essentially simplifying one's contact with stressful stimuli.
