Law/Patents
English term or phrase: litigation friend
This is een expression I have come across whilst translating a Response pack for a civil case. I assume it is someone who represents the defendent when he/she is underaged or mentally ill, but is there a Dutch expression?
Thanks for your help!

Dutch translation:voogd
Explanation:
Hoi Willemina, je hebt gelijk, volgens informatie dat ik van de hierondervermelde site heb gehaald. Ik zou het bekende Nederlandse 'voogd' gebruiken daar de vele rechtsvormen in het buitenland hier niet toegepast worden en daarom ook niet als zodanig bekend zijn.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Marijke

secondant

Explanation:
secondant = somebody who supports, represents or protects a defendant's interests during a lawsuit. In earlier times it was a term used in duelling cases, nowadays it is used in lawsuits/court.

Your assumption was correct, a litigiation friend is used in cases you mentioned. See: "Where any party to litigation in the Civil Courts is under disability, i.e. is a minor or patient (patient is defined as a person who suffers from mental disorder within the meaning of S.1 of the Mental Health Act 1983 which renders that person incapable of managing his property and affairs) and there is no one suitable and willing to act as their litigation friend (see Part 21 of the Civil Procedure Rules) the Official Solicitor will be prepared to act as litigation friend subject to his costs being covered (see Civil Procedure Rules, 21PD-002, para 3.6).
