The text is about different hardboard siding tests according to ASTM. The nail-head pull-through (any suggestions?) test requires a 6-penny common nail to be driven in the specimen. I know '6-penny' is an indication of the length (2") but I cannot think of a good Dutch term apart from 'een 2 cm lange spijker'.

Asker: Leo, bedankt voor je antwoord. Ik wilde je gisteren al bedanken en punten geven, maar ik kwam er niet aan uit. Excuses. Ik moet nog leren hoe alles werkt hier.

agree  vic voskuil: natuurlijk wel prachtig, al die romantiek, maar de iets flauwere spijkers van '5 cm' lijken me toch iets beter dan de wat roestiger duimpjes.

  -> mmm... Metriek heeft eigenlijk ook best mijn voorkeur, maar dan liever 50 mm ipv 5 cm. Maar hoe de timmerman op de bouwplaats ze tegenwoordig noemt weet ik (nog) niet.
