All holders of the document are known so they may receive updates as required. All documents must be returned to Document Controller upon leaving the company. Het komt erop neer dat in geval van een controlled document volgens een bepaald protocol wordt vastgelegd wanneer en door wie het werd geschreven. Revisies kunnen alleen door geautoriseerde personen worden uitgevoerd en ook die revisies worden weer geregistreerd. Verder kan er bijvoorbeeld een lijst worden opgesteld van de personen die een exemplaar van de gereviseerde tekst moeten ontvangen.
