This is the name Franz Anton Mesmer gave to his pseudo-scientific 18th century theory about magnetic forces which work on animate objects. It is often referred to as Mesmerism. In French, the original language of his manuscript, the phenomenon is called "Magnétisme Animal". I wonder if the Dutch word for it is "dierlijk magnetisme". Who could help me?
