Does anybody know what the IT term "string" means (used in computer/IT user manuals)?

(i.e. "generic string", "message string"

Any suggestions more than welcome!

Dutch translation:"String"
Explanation:
Dear Anne,

In general "string" means a series of characters (usually code) that together form a useable command or part of a program code. Most often, it is not translated because there is no really meaningful translation. "Tekenreeks" would be fine, but another option is to leave things such as "generic string" and "Message string" as is. Of course, this depends partly on the context. In specific IT-related texts such as manuals, I would leave it in English.

TEKENREEKS

Explanation:
Microsoft translates "string" as
tekenreeks.
However, for "message string" they simply use "Bericht"

tekstketen, tekenketen enz

Explanation:
Een "string" is steeds een opeenvolging van elementen, en als dusdanig dus overeenstemmend met "keten".

Nadien is het de kontekst die uitmaakt wat voor "keten" het betreft.

Groetjes.
