English term or phrase: peasant acquisitiveness
Greetings,

The context:
Antonio undoubtedly had a strong streak of peasant acquisitiveness…

The word 'peasant' is an adjective here.

More follows as a postscript.

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

PS As promised:
Given his natural reticence in all matters touching his personal feelings, the silence in itself is not surprising. But the fact that after going to Vienna he suddenly abandoned it in order to proclaim his wrongs and to stress and publish to the world his father's despotism and the tyrannical control to which he was subjected as a child makes one suspect that this unusual frankness was not entirely ingenuous. On the other hand, Antonio (Paganini’s father) undoubtedly had a strong streak of peasant acquisitiveness and a laudable desire to better his position, which made him, like Beethoven's father, view his son's extraordinary talents "as a marketable commodity," as a stepping-stone to wealth more rapid and less risky than the gaming table.
