English term or phrase: Why the long tail doesn’t have to wag the advertising dog after all!
Creating For The Long Tail
So fine. Interactive advertising now includes everything from behaviorally-targeted banner ads to video search, flash-enabled email, social networking sites, blogs, podcasts, mobile marketing, in-game spots, mash-ups, wikis and widgets. We get it. Lots of niche-targeting and across-the-board accountability. But can any one Advertiser /Agency afford to develop, implement and track a creative strategy that spans the breadth of Interactive, and traditional media channels as well? Well… What if the cost of developing and producing contextually-relevant ads for a plethora of Interactive tactics cost just about the same as cutting your 30-second TV spot down to a :15? Or what if you provided consumers with a detailed brand brief and put a measure of content creation and dissemination into their hands, saving distribution dollars? Come hear our experts explain ****why the long tail doesn’t have to wag the advertising dog after all!****

: the usual phrase is 'it's the tail wagging the dog' (instead of the natural way round !). It's not really a pun - it's a metaphor, comme (style titre d'actualité ;Published on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 by the Toronto Star
Israeli Tail Wags American Dog", although there's a web definition of the recent business term 'long tail' = "when you give people millions of choices—in movies, or other consumables—then create a graph, where the available choices are plotted (in descending order of popularity) .....the result is a swooping line with a "long tail." In other words, a relatively small percentage of the available items will be very popular, but most of the items available will receive little use".
To me your writer is saying that the doubt about such broad spectrum ('éclaté' ?) investment in advertising on all these fronts is perhaps unfounded and is in fact worthwhile.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Je suis supercool, don't worry.

"The tail's wagging the dog" = c'est le monde à l'envers.

Bon courage !

agree  siragui: I like the explanations (conveying the sense of "long tail" seems more important than keeping the wordplay), but I'm not sure about the final formulation.

-> seeing your comment at top, we totally agree with the thrust of the argument. So forget even snappy metaphors, nalely, the idea that all that advertising investment is (incongruously) calling the tune is a MISCONCEPTION, and is in fact WORTHWHILE

Explanation:
A stab at paraphrasing the sentence. I've already explained my interpretation of the play on words above. Good luck!
