Explanation:
Just a comment to add that the very same form is used very commonly indeed in English too. Cela fait plus chic! It goes back to the time when the educated part of the English population spoke French rather than English. England has even had kings who did not speak English at all. But then that's another story...

Explanation:
R.S.V.P is recalling 70's administrative paperwork and is no longer used in casual mailing (even formal invites). This formulation is much more current and remains very polite.
