à quoi bon faire ça.

D'après le contexte, je comprends que le spectateur pense (et la foule reprend sa pensée), que cela n'avance à rien de frapper un enfant.
J'ai d'ailleurs récemment entendu la même expression : en regardant un film américain, avec une scène ou un policier frappe presque à mort un suspect et alors que son collègue intervient, pour faire cesser le massacre, il prononce les mêmes paroles.
(sous-entendu il faut être un malade pour frapper comme ça).
