English term or phrase: BEGINNINGS OF WORDS
Contexte : linguistique et genre grammatical

Further research
showed that the native French speakers in this study
(ages 7-17) reproduced these distributional
regularities in their assignment of gender to RARE, INVENTED AND **NONCE** (NONSENSE) NOUNS, suggesting that noun endings play an important role in gender
assignment.

Results suggest that the BEGINNINGS OF WORDS
might also have played a role in the subjects' choices
in cases where the endings were ambiguous as to
gender.

Ma question est un peu bête, je le reconnais; mais y a-t-il des questions bêtes en traduction?
Voulez-vous "souffrir" avec moi? :-)

Explanation:
Il existe des réponses bêtes? Je ne vois pas pourquoi vous vous compliquez la vie, Daniel. Je ne crois pas que "the beginnings of words" a quelconque connation spéciale, si c'est cela que vous craignez. Enfin, parfois c'est compliqué, parfois c'est simple.

Good luck.

le début des mots

Explanation:
In this case there is no need to repeat the plural (it is correct but sounds a bit akward).
Maybe that the words "radical des mots" would be clearer (in the context)
