.....You are lucky if your bank has a cent, or a cent and a half, for every dollar you think you have in the bank. The only reason they can get away with this is the time-honoured one of knowing from experience that only a handful of depositors are likely to ask for cash at any one time. If for any reason depositors confidence was shaken and they began a "run" on the bank they would be out of luck because their money doesnt exist in real form. Their only hope would be a massive intervention by the Bank of Canada ro monetize (print legal tender money to buy)the bonds and other assets held by the banks.

Si la confiance des épargnants se muait en défiance et qu'ils se précipitent (à la banque) pour retirer leurs fonds...

confidence = confiance

was shaken = était ébranlée (j'ai préféré opposer la défiance à la confiance pour renforcer l'effet

run = rush = précipitation. Dans ce contexte de guillemets il ne s'agit bien évidemment pas d'un holdup.
