En voulant corriger l'orthographe de mon commentaire à mrquiz, j'ai effacé ce qui précédait:

high-water mark: laisse de haute mer, marée haute (droit maritime)
high water mark: laisse de pleine mer

Explanation:
C'est même "high water mark" (sans trait d'union), soit "laisse de haute mer". L'image est d'un point culminant semestriel, si on veut, donc "plafond" est parfait dans le contexte.

En tout cas, le terme est très souvent utilisé en anglais pour parler d'un secteur qui plafonne. Par exemple, beaucoup d'encre coule dans la presse financière sur les dot.com et la "high water mark".

Answer 1: A highwater mark has to do with hedge fund managers compensation, which is
performance based (the manager gets a cut of the profit). The
presence of the high water mark means if he or she loses money in one year
or time period, then the partner's capital account has to get back to that high water mark --
the high point of value that the fund/account was at -- before the manager starts
getting a performance percentage share of new appreciation.
Hypothetically, say I start a fund with 1 mil, and lose 5%
(50K) the first year. Then the second year I make 200K. The first year
I make no money, because the fund made no money.
2nd year, without a high water mark, I make say 20% performance allocation of $200K, or $40K to me. With a high water mark, I only make 20% of ($200K- $50K
makeup), or $30K to me, because I had to make up the first year loss
and get back to the high water mark before I start accruing any performance allocation.
