English term or phrase: fat tails
This is statisticians' talk to refer to one-in-a-million events, I think. Confirmation of this, origin of the expression and translation into French welcome.

Many thanks in advance,

Béa

French translation:fat tails
Explanation:
If the audience is familiar with statistics, you can leave it in English.
See, for example:

Your answer pointed me in the right direction. Searching "lois de distribution" I was able to find a few occurrences of "distributions à queues épaisses" on Canadian sites" and "distributions à queues lourdes" on French sites. Since the article is for a French daily, I opted for "queues lourdes".

Maany thanks to you and all those who helped.

Cheers,

Béa

Don't know the French, though

Explanation:

Fat Tails - Describes the appearance of a probability curve which has a
higher-than-normally-expected occurrence of observations in the remote
areas, or tails, away from the mean.

queues grasses OU fat tails

Explanation:
Le Canada francophone semble avoir opté pour "queue grasse" (n f) et les milieux spécialisés en France pour l'expression anglaise.

Le sens est celui d'une ditribution statistique non Normale.

Sommaire : (...) Nous généralisons le modèle de base en y ajoutant des effets de levier par le biais d'une corrélation entre les chocs observables et de variance, et la possibilité de distributions conditionnelles à queues épaisses.

Abstract : (...) We extend the basic SVOL needs to allow for the leverage effect, through a correlation between observable and variance errors, and fat-tails in the conditional distribution.

Explanation:
Si l'article est destiné à un quotidien, "queue lourde" ne devrait pas manquer de déclencher une franche hilarité ("queue grasse" non plus d'ailleurs).
