The A most certainly stands for Australian. I found Australian Business Number but I'm not sure.

Les individus qui sont en entreprise unipersonnelle ont un ABN, et beaucoup d'administrations aussi (car elles sont semi-privées), c'est pourquoi on peut le trouver à des endroits surprenants.
Mais quand on y pense, dire "ABN Number" est déjà étrange, puisque le N signifie déjà "Number".

In Australia you need to use: TFN for individuals (Tax File Number, ie "numéro d'identification fiscale"according to http://www.senat.fr/lc/lc59/lc595.html) , and ABN (Australian Business Number) for companies (SA or Ltd, as far as I know).
