Simple Network Management Protocol. An equipment that supports it is called "managed" and the piece of software that performs this task is called "agent". "Heart beat" is the function of the agent whereby it sends a message without any information "payload" - just to indicate that it is "alive" - i.e., not crashed. Sometimes called "keep alive" function.
