Q3 real GDP growth rate went well beyond the market expectation and surprised the market by marking +0.5% QOQ. However, a closer look at its components reveals that the headline growth rate cannot be taken at its face value. On one hand, those main factors that pushed up the growth rate included private non-residential investment (rate of contribution +0.4% point), private inventory (rate of contribution +0.3% point), and net exports (rate of contribution +0.4% point). On the other hand, the most influential factor that dragged down the growth rate was private consumption (rate of contribution -0.4% point). Overall picture was that the Japanese economic growth for Q4 was lead by rather volatile factors with private inventory expected to be in an adjustment period for the coming periods and net exports considered to somewhat moderate given the U.S. slowdown.
