avertisseur sonore / sirène Explanation: This is certainly one term that I have come across in FR > EN documents I have encountered. You may find it useful to refer to suppliers' on-line catalogues, and I would recommend RS Components in particular, as they have ref. numbers that are easy to cross-reference between the EN and FR versions of their sites, and you should find lots of examples of these types of components that could help you. By the way, sounder very often = audible warning device, which is the literal translation of course of av. son. You might also find that in some instances, where the context is most explicit, that you can use the term 'sirène' as an alternative. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2008-04-30 14:35:08 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- You need to be particularly careful to avoid using terms like 'système sonore', which is not really at all what 'sounder' means. In particular, in the extract below, your proposed translation actually introduces an error: "Toutes les sorties du système sonore (sounder) En sélectionnant cette option, il est possible de désactiver et activer toutes les sorties définies dans la configuration comme système sonore (sounder). Here, these are not 'sorties du système sonore' (= 'sound system outputs'), but rather, 'sorties pour avertisseurs sonores' (= 'outputs intended to feed a sounder') I reallt hink that 'avertisseur sonore' is exactly the term you need — it is exactly the generic equivalent term for both 'sounder' and 'audible warning device'. There are only a few instances where it is possible that the term 'sounder' is being used to describe one particular TYPE of AWD, where a more specific term might be called for. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2008-04-30 14:39:27 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Don't be afraid to use 'buzzer' in FR, that particualr one is quite common. And there is nothing whatsoever wrong with using all sorts of varieties of 'avertisseur' Your only real problem comes with translating 'segnalatore sonoro / acoustico' — and I can find no technical justification to differentiate between those in EN. Both these two and 'sounder' would be best translated by a single term in FR, i.e. 'avertisseur sonore' as I have said. |
