Economic data reports in August intensified the debate over the near term direction of the US economy. As is often the case with broad statistical releases such as employment (weak) and personal income and consumption (strong), multiple interpretations are possible. However, it was the policy directive statement from the August 10th FOMC meeting wherein the committee announced its intention to maintain the size of its balance sheet at current levels that shifted market opinion of future economic prospects broadly to the negative. After all, why would the committee choose such a course if economic prospects were not worsening? Then again, after public pronouncements from FOMC members suggesting they were not downgrading their 2011 economic forecasts the debate renewed again. By month’s end, the good/bad pattern seen early in the month kept either side from gaining a strongly supportable position.

Résultat des courses : les deux camps (les optimistes qui croient qu'on sort de la crise) et les pessimistes (ceux qui croient que le bout du tunnel n'est pas encore en vue) n'ont toujours pas trouvé d'éléments factuels susceptibles d'étayer leur position.
