English term or phrase: It makes men’s throats grow wistful
Il s'agit d'une phrase qu'un journal a écrit lorsque l'on a allumé la 1ère enseigne lumineuse publicitaire dans un café londonien.

French translation:une enseigne qui donne soif aux hommes
Explanation:
littéralement: qui fait se languir le gosier des hommes

pas très joli, mais c'est le sens, on pourrait traduire que c'est une enseigne qui donne soif, tout simplement

it makes men’s throats grow wistful
Ca donne envie a boire

Explanation:
Lacking context, this is somewhat a guess, but it would seem that what the newspaper was implying was that the neon advertising sign was effective.

quel mélange !!!!!! voir ci-après

Explanation:
il y deux expressions qu'on semble avoir mélangées allègrement

to have a lump in one's throat - avoir la gorge serrée/une boule dans la gorge

to feel wistful - être nostalique - avoir la nostalgie de qu'ch
it makes men grow wistful (not their throats)

donc en voyant ce nouveau pnéomène on avait la gorge serrée de nostalgie....

OK - alors ils ont la gorge serrée mais c'est la nostalgie de la boisson

neutral  emiledgar: I don't think the expression "...lump in the throat" is in the genesis of this phrase.
