Contexte:

Since it was revealed that David Beckham had a crush on Cherie Blair, the air has been **riven with the sound of dry retching**.

je ne trouve que "haut-le-coeur" pour 'retching', rien pour 'dry retching'

Bref, pas très sûre comment traduire ceci de manière idiomatique et lui donner un sens figuré. J'ai pensé au début à "on a entendu grincer bien des dents " mais je pense que j'étais très loin de l'image.

ou bien entendre des "hoquets" (de surprise) c'est plus simple, ou bien "ils hoquetèrent de dégoût", un vomissement sec n'existe pas , au sujet d'un haut le cœur je pense maintenant qu'il n'arrive que si on a une sensation qui affecte les sens du goût, et de l'odorat.
