History
English term or phrase: to suppress it with stake-burnings
Crusaders from Languedoc returning from Palestine through the Balkans brought bogomil ideas home, thus launching the Cathar heresy. The Popes were forced to inaugurate the Inquisition *to suppress it with stake-burnings* and torture and the slaughter of entire towns.

Comment comprendre cette fin de phrase??
Merci d'avance!

mettre ces idées au bûcher

Explanation:

Notes to answerer

agree  Alain Chouraki: "suppresse it", "it" se réfère effectivement à l'hérésie cathare, non l'inquisition
