I give the sentence because in fact I don't understand what it means. the fact that the vinland map exists in the 15th century certainly presents the very real possibility of Columbus, or someone in contact with him, having some knowledge of the map.

It is really very simple. I think you get confused by the the insert of "or someone in contact with him". The map itself is a vague outline of North America which was called Vinland by what probably was a Viking discovery and map.

also in regard to the Vinland Map, it is thought the it was a Viking Map which ended up in Bizantium/Constantinople and when the city fell in 1453 was moved to Venise by some learned refugee.
