Monsieur ou Madame Untel

Explanation:
= Mr or Mrs "Whoever"

Attention Françoise: Do not use Monsieur ou Madame X, that does not exist in French.
Do not use Madame Unetelle either. Untel hjas to remain at the masculine even when preceded by feminine Madame because in this case, Untel is used as a proper name, a last name!
Au plaisir,

Monsieur Dupont

Explanation:
You really need more context. The use of John Doe by police and forensic people for instance is very specific and would require a different translation, but in the general meaning of a very common name, the equivalent in French would be Monsieur Dupont.

Cheers,

Béa

Monsieur Untel , madame Unetelle (as stated in my first response)

Explanation:
Contrairement a l'opinion de d'autres personnes, le terme Madame Unetelle est parfaitement acceptable. Plusieurs exemples en existent, en fait. Ci-bas, par exemple, une page web du Journal du Barreau du Quebec, ou les termes sont employes. J'inclus une autre page web, comme support additionel. De plus, le nom de Dupont, qui n'est pas si commun au Quebec, n'est pas employe de la facon dont il se serait probablement en France.
