Le terme original equipment manufacturer et son sigle OEM désignent, dans leur sens premier, le fabricant ou le constructeur de matériel ou d'équipement informatique d'origine. S'il y a eu glissement de sens, c'est vraisemblablement pour deux raisons. Comme l'ensemblier qui exploite ce matériel d'origine est autorisé à vendre sous son nom le produit qu'il fabrique, on en est venu à employer également ces termes pour le qualifier. En outre, on utilise aussi l'abréviation OEM (pour OEM client) pour désigner l'ensemblier, puisqu'il est le client du fabricant de matériel d'origine.
Certains documents associent le sigle OEM à l'expression other equipment manufacturer, mais c'est original equipment manufacturer qui est la signification la plus courante attribuée à ce sigle.
