I think it would be very helpful to know just what sort of equipment is involved here? In particualr, it would be interesting to know just what it is that is being 'inserted' in one of two different orientations? I'm envisaging some find of rectangular 'thing' that has dimensions different enough to justify the description 'end' or 'side', being inserted into a slot or hole in some larger 'thing' — but it could also be the other way round!
So are we peering into this 'slot or hole' using the flashlight?
It's easy enough to see the general idea, but I suspect the actual translation solution required is going to be highly dependent on the specifics of the equipment involved.
To take one example from the use of credit cards — modern chip-and-pin card machines are 'end-in'; whereas the older 'swipe' type might have been described as 'side-in'.
